Healing Trauma Is Healing the Body
Jun 02, 2026
There is a certain way in which information is presented that may resinate with us. When we feel the influence of pleasant sounds in our bodies, when we see our creative imagination expanding, when poetic symbols and words touch our hearts,... how do you know when something is true?
There is an inner knowing within each of us that can be a guiding light. We have a depth to our soul that is unfathomable to the mind. Intuition the sixth sense can help us see in the dark, it can be a beacon of bright radiance in a sea of darkness. Nurturing and growing this essence self, this intuitive sensitive nature is of the utmost importance. We often times need to create the time and space to grow this more delicate sensitive side of ourselves.
If water can change it’s structure when different frequencies, sounds, tones, words, intentions were offered to it. If a plant would grow better in an environment of love, light and good music... How are you growing friend?
In a world full of ways to get lost, addicted, to fall asleep and abandon ourselves, true courage can mean facing into our own healing. Healing the parts of ourselves that may have experienced injury or trauma be it emotional, mental, physical or spiritual can bring peace to ourselves and our loved ones. Dealing with the depths of mental constructs and familiar cyclical emotions can help us to release old patterns. In my experience these patterns of consciousness affect our physical structure.
We may have set aside our hurt and pain to continue on with life, maybe we didn’t have the tools to process or deal with the pain when we were that age. These parts of ourselves have a greater influence over us than our conscious minds may understand. These places within us and those moments, those experiences that got hurt, shut down or abandoned may be running programs that substantially contribute to creating core beliefs that keep us stuck in some or all aspects of our lives.
Looking into our internal landscape and being with the feelings and experiences we may have had that were unpleasant, that we may hide from or store in our body can liberate and free up stuck energy and the unconscious blocks that limit our lives.
I am in complete admiration of my teacher Lee Joseph and his life long partner Carole Madsen.
I was recalling a story Lee told, Lee always told a good story. He had a client come in, in a raincoat. It was a trench coat yellow full body raincoat. She didn’t take the rain coat off when she went to get on the table. She laid down and Lee thought this was a little peculiar. He noticed the thought and stayed in his accepting present moment awareness. He contacted her where she was at, he held space for her exactly as she arrived, without thinking she should be a certain way to be acceptable.
For months of sessions she kept that rain coat on. And for months he contacted her where she was at. In complete acceptance of her in the condition she presented she began to trust again, which was part of what she was working thru.
For so many reasons I love this story. I love that Lee got curious and stayed in his awareness. I love that he created and held a container in which he was centered and present in awareness and this created acceptance and a loving field available to this woman that she was able to work thru what it was that she had come in to see him for and maybe it had something to do with what had her in that trench coat, and she was brave enough to come forward for healing.
Many of us wear a trench coat in certain areas of our lives. There are places within us that maybe tight, contracted and need to open up to the sun again. There may be ways in which we lock down, stay small, or have learned or been conditioned to internalize abuse with negative self talk.
If we experienced abuse in any form, or if we had parents who fought or divorced, as young children we could have taken on beliefs that it was our fault, that we weren’t good enough for mom or dad to stick around for. I’m not lovable, or I’m not good enough are some core beliefs that can be hard to weed out, if there were traumatic experiences that were followed up by other reaffirming events to form core beliefs. By the time we are 7 as children we form the major belief systems that can, if we don’t plant another seed, stay with us for the rest of our lives.
I had a client who kept apologizing about the smallest things. She seemed to gas light herself by laughing and making fun of herself. I contacted her in a gentle way and as we stayed curious she uncovered some sexual abuse in her early life. She started to realize how the behaviors she didn’t know where they were coming from were rooted in these times early on where she had felt unsafe.
She gained a greater sense of understanding and with support she was able to rest into awareness that heals these experiences. Her sciatic nerve pain was relieved when she recognized that her body was directly experiencing these memories and trying to express them to her through their body language, the language of sensation.
Beliefs can be changed. Core beliefs are like a hardware system, software is more easily upgraded. Hardware sometimes means we have outdated models. We may need to upgrade and recognize where we have been conditioned to think and feel things that we no longer truly believe.
We have patterns of thinking and feeling that become habitual and can often run in the subconscious. Our conscious mind is our analytical mind responsible for logic, problem solving and ability to change habits. This is about 5% of our mind capacity. Our subconscious and unconscious mind is the other 95%. Subconscious mind is the intuitive, spontaneous imaginative creative mind and includes the hormones the chemicals that are our emotions.
With Presence Centered Awareness Therapy we can access these older files. When we trace our memories back and heal these parts we can integrate new more regulated beliefs that are more in alignment with the truth of who we are.
Our connective tissue is a sponge and has absorbed every single experience we have had. Fascia is an interconnected web and can get caught up when these traumas are not processed. Often times we block it out and try to avoid the pain, and then don’t have the openness to be present for this moment, because part of us may still be caught up in the past.
It’s important to bring these more intense feelings to be felt, seen and acknowledged. Not forced just offered a place to be felt. It is in the feeling that there is healing.
I practice Presence Centered Awareness Therapy and offer it during Myofascial Release sessions. I support my clients to heal. With these two modalities paired the results are transformational.
