Myofascial Release: Why is Fascia Important?

Jun 02, 2026

Fascia is a relatively newly discovered system of the body. Scientists are still trying to understand the mechanics of fascia, because our bodies continually change shape, the connective tissue takes on different forms and shapes dependent upon the action and shape your body makes with its posture.

The doctors called it a packing material, comparing it to the styrofoam in the box of our body. Research on fascia was done on cadavers up until 40 years ago. Until then, fascia was studied in the non-living form and scientists missed the key characteristics of fascia because it is a living system.

This medium IS like a packing material, as it wraps every one of your 28–32 trillion cells. The fascia is a saran wrap like membrane that connects each cell, and is also the interstitial fluid that bathes the cell. Connective tissue has different densities from fluid to bone and every time it adds it is wrapped again and bathed in fascia, it is the mother of all systems because every system is held in fascia.

The muscles are held in a wrapping of fascia at the muscle cell, fiber, bundle, individual muscle and group of muscles. When the fascia becomes injured or damaged, and during the repair process it can create scar tissue in excess. Adhesions, inflammation, pain, tenderness, hard and hot to the touch are indications there may be fascial restriction.

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a specialized technique that helps people recover from trauma and injury. I have been treating several clients with extreme conditions including scoliosis with excellent results.

One of my clients is at 30% curvature of the spine, their rib cage is 4 inches to the side of the pelvis. The erector spinae are a group of muscles that keep the spine erect and they run parallel to the spine, on the left and right side. Both of her erector spinae muscle groups migrated over to the left side. This was pulling her pelvis into extreme torsion and creating digestive issues, back pain, sciatica—you name it.

With Myofascial Release sessions we were able to move the right side muscles that had migrated. We shifted them back to their proper right side, and the results held and stayed. Each session with her, we shift and change fascial planes to move her back to her center. Each day she was coming back more into vertical and horizontal alignment. We dealt with the injuries she had throughout her life and released the fascial restrictions as they arose in different parts of her body.

Over 10 sessions she had significant relief in pain, inflammation and she was more active and able to do her work and had energy enough to play. Her gait was more even and her posture both standing up taller and more symmetrical from left to right.

MFR reorganizes your tissues and differentiates the muscles from one another so that they are more effectively functioning in their specific role.

Your body is an architectural masterpiece and your fascial system is the building material. If you think of the body as a building, stacking in segments from the ground up, we are looking for symmetrical even tension from left to right, front to back. When something is out of alignment the body has to balance by creating restriction on the opposite side as it stacks up.

So a little bit of tension in the feet can transfer to the neck and have created restriction often in a zig-zag pattern up through the ankle, knee, hip, low, mid back, shoulders, neck and head. This is why it is so important to get treated.

Your fascial system allows you mobility or rigidity. Your motions are as fluid as your fascial matrix. When your tissue is released you will feel connectivity in your body, mind, emotions and consciousness. When you have pain in your body this is your body talking to you, it is time to stop and listen. The body’s intelligence is vast and has messages for you. When you can tap into it, you can clear and release restrictions to find and act more from your essential nature.

There is evidence of consciousness living within the fascia, because emotional and mental stress can be transferred by way of the fascia. So can pleasure, joy and happiness. It can be felt within the body. When your body is in a fluid connected state your fascia, made mostly of collagen fibers, is hydrated and receiving nutrients and eliminating wastes.

Myo: Muscle and Fascial Therapy relieves pain, inflammation and stops the process of internal scarring from trauma or injury. Healing the fascia, freeing the tissues that create you allows you to find your full range of motion, balances the pelvic torsion, and releases the straight jacket within the fascial planes that become bound and rigid.

The way that you walk is positively affected, your gait will be looser. A more even balanced pelvis allows the spine to be in alignment and the legs to function properly. The foundation of the feet, ankles and calves become more grounded to set up the architecture of the rest of the body.

Myofascial Release is a modality that effectively releases the fascial system. It is deep and gentle. It helps to create positive structural change so that the fascia becomes more organized, fluid and in tensegrity: equal positive tension.

My name is Angela Rose. I am a Myofascial Release Therapist and have over 20 years as an injury specialist. I practice Presence Centered Awareness Therapy during sessions.

I practice Myofascial Release exclusively because the results speak for themselves. I read your body and can effectively & positively change your body’s structure.
